Diigo an Important Tool in Your Educational Web 2.0 Arsenal

I have really started using Diigo to share my bookmarks. What is wonderful is that Diigo is also a community. Here is a nice slide show about how to use Diigo for social bookmarking and annotations. I have made a conscious decision to include some personal tags. You can either create too accounts or you can even make certain bookmarks private.

Turning Point

I have had this blog since I took a course last fall. I thought I was being quite smart calling it Tales from the Edge. Since I work in technology, I am often pulled in different directions and I often feel like that kitten hanging on the limb being told to "Hang in there." Lately, I have realized I am standing at a different edge in my learning and career. I want to explore this further, although I am a bit nervous putting myself out there.

For two years I have been using Twitter and have had the pleasure meeting some great people from all around the world. After listening to members of my Twitter community preparing I decided to go to the NEIT 2009 conference at the Mohonk Mountain House. At the conference I finally was able to put faces to this small part of the Twitter world: arvind grover, Alex Ragone, Pam Fortin, Bill Camp, Kerri Richardson, Karen Blumberg and Liz Davis. There are even a few who due to illness could not make it physically to Mohonk but through the network they were able to participate. I have followed these people, read their blogs and heard their podcasts for two years. I really respect the work that they do in and out of the classroom. What did I bring to the table?

This conference was a turning point for me. Yes the keynote speakers, anthropologist and college professor, Michael Wesch and Siva Vaidhyanathan, author of The Googlization of Everything, were thought provoking. The open sessions offered great discussions and new ideas about projects for the classroom or how to restructure your technology office. I was not surprised at the wonderful job that the committee members did. What I did not realize was I had an audience. I really did not realize that people were reading what I was writing, that I had something to offer. The funniest part was they knew me by my Twitter picture.

Well now I am ready to make the next step and try blogging. Through my research and writing I hope to explore how technology can change my students’ learning experience. Since work at a school for students with language based learning disabilities, reading and writing is extremely difficult for them. How would writing and creating content online change their writing? I don’t know but I hope to find out.
